Pancakes, glorious pancakes

If you live in or have ever visited the suburbs of New South Wales you’ve probably heard about a magical place called Pancakes on the Rocks. If you havent, I will tell you now: Pancakes on the Rocks is magical and you should most definitely go.

The Sydney Harbour location I went to is deep in tourist territory so there were line-ups — sorry, queues — when we went, but it was totally worth the wait as the pancakes they serve here are pretty damn epic.

I was introduced to this establishment after a trip to Manly beach, when my friend and I decided to take the ferry back to the harbour so we could have an early “dinner”. Yes, we had pancakes for dinner. There’s totally nothing wrong with that.

Until we went inside, the only thing I knew was that this was a popular place with locals and tourists alike. Aside from that, I only had my friend’s words to go by.. of which I’m quite sure he used the words, “pancake wet dream”.

Um, ok, crazy pancake-obsessed person, was what I’d initially thought. That is until I saw what was on the menu. Woah.

For the past year or so I have been an eater of flourless “pancakes” just because I need fewer ingredients to make them, and I like to think they’re a bit healthier too. I say pancakes in quotes because I’m not sure if it’s still a pancake if there’s no flour in it. Does it need to rise like a cake to be considered a pancake? What makes a pancake a pancake anyway? If you put pancake batter in a waffle iron, is it still a pancake? If it’s a cake, why is it served for breakfast? Why am I not eating pancakes right now? These are all questions I want answers to, but I digress.

The pancakes at Pancakes on the Rocks are definitely more cake-like, especially if you get the chocolate ones. Super fluffy, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. This is not the place to go if you’re on any kind of diet. Or if, for some strange reason, you don’t like pancakes. You come here to order a pile of delectable, glorious pancakes bigger than your face, that come with a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. Whether you decide to add maple syrup to the mix is up to you, but TBH I would do it anyway. If you’re going to die of a sugar overdose you may as well go out with a bang.

Pancakes on the Rocks serves other food too, like crepes (skinny pancakes!), burgers, ribs, and pizza… which may or may not be any good, I couldn’t tell you. I will say that I personally wouldn’t go to a pancake place to eat a pizza. Or would I? A pizza is kind of like a pancake, isn’t it? One could even say it’s just a big, savoury pancake that you can eat with your hands with little to no mess.

I think it’s quite obvious I have pancake brain right now so I think this is a good time to sign off. Where have you had the most amazing pancakes ever? Lemme know!
