As a kid I used to looove Doritos. My parents (like all good parents) hated them and would only let me have them and other junk food on special occassions, and for good reason. It’s all nacho cheese-flavoured chemicals. Of course I didn’t know that at the time, and I was happy to put those tasty cheese chemicals in my mouth whenever I could.
Thankfully, as I’ve gotten older and mostly matured, so have my tastes. It’s a lot easier for me to resist junk food these days, but sometimes I can’t help but give in to the sweet, sweet nacho cheesey cravings. For instance, when they introduced those random flavours a while back, I couldn’t not try them. Does anyone remember those “Late Night” cheeseburger flavoured Doritos? I do. They were amazing, and I have yet to figure out why anyone would want to discontinue them. That’s a topic for another story (*sad face*), but I digress.
I’ve found something to curb my cravings while Googling “healthy Doritos alternatives”. Enter Doritos-flavoured popcorn! Check out the recipe from Whole New Mom.
The coconut water in the photo was purely for my refreshment while I was making this. The slight sweetness was a nice compliment to the popcorn, I might add.
I quadrupled the recipe and now keep it sealed in a little jar in my spice rack so that I can sprinkle a little Doritos flavour on anything I want. Baked tortilla chips, pita chips, kale chips, pasta sauce… Now if I could only recreate that cheeseburger Doritos flavour my life will be complete.
